A BREATHTAING TRIP INTO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
The “Grotte di Bossea” Caves, in the Corsaglia Valley, municipality of Frabosa Soprana, are among the most impressive tourist caves in Italy, not only for their immense fascination, but also for their great geological wealth and for the numerous paleontological remains which have been found there. 2 km of karst caves reaching a level of 700 m high, with numerous natural wonders such as boulders, stalagmite and stalactite columns, calcareous concretions and underground lakes and streams. An extraordinary discovery which was made in the first half of the 19th century.
Explorations were carried out until 1949, although the caves are still visited by speleological groups, intent on exploring every last corner. For the first time, in 1874, an interior lighting system was implanted for visitors. Among the most fascinating cavities is where you can see a complete skeleton of a cave bear, a Pleistocene creature who lived in its completely natural habitat in the cave. In the room named, “the bear”, special events and concerts are offered all year long. There is also an underground karst laboratory, managed by the Bossea Scientific Station (CAI of Cuneo – the Italian Alpine Club) and by the Geo-resources and Territory Department of the Polytechnic University in Turin, with additional collaboration of the ARPA Department of Cuneo (which collects environmental data).
The “Grotte di Bossea” Caves constitute the terminal section of a large karst system, which stretches between the Prato Nevoso ski bowl (“la Conca”) and the Corsaglia Valley River
